Stretching Exercises for Health
|
The stretching exercise below should be part of your daily regimen to
prevent back problems from developing. The exercise looks easy, but
looks can be deceiving. The instructors at the Beverly Hills Martial
Arts Center do this important stretch throughout the day. While at
the studio a ballet bar is used, you can use the back of a heavy
sturdy chair or table.

You should feel a stretch (not pain) in your legs, your arms and your
back. After you feel comfortable, it is time to explore the many benefits
of this posture. Shift the weight into your heels while pulling gently
away from the chair or table and take 3 deep breaths. Next shift the
weight onto the outside of your feet and take 3 deep breaths then
shift the weight into your instep and repeat the breathing exercises.
Try pulling away from the table and then pulling towards the table with
your arms. Take note of where your muscles are tight and try relaxing
them with a deep breath. To add a grand finale to the stretch, squat
down, while holding onto to table or sturdy chair, exhaling as you go
down. Stay in this position for a few breaths.
Millions of Americans suffer from back problems that inflict everyone from athletes to couch potatoes to
parents of little ones who use that number one back killer "the car seat."
Directions: Take a deep breathe filling up the lungs so you can feel
gentle pressure in your upper back and stomach muscles; exhale as
you bend over securely grabbing the chair or table -almost all your
weight should be in your legs. Stay in this position for three breaths.
